BMW M42/M44 Turbo Manifold Development Progress - For sale on Pre-Order!
For the second manifold development, we took a poll on Instagram and Facebook through a couple survey posts on various e30/e36 pages to see who would be interested in a manifold for the m42 &44 engined cars. The response was quite positive, so we started development. First step was finalizing the draft design we had prepared and getting it into a final CAD model...
Next step, as per usual, was a LOT of 3D printing again, to check fits and clearances. For this, an old cylinder head was used and measurements taken from an e30 engine bay. Notice that to keep a low flange height in the engine and to fit the turbo housing, quite a big angle is needed to clear the chain tensioner bolt head...
You will also notice from the picture above that this time, we printed the mock-up one piece at a time, with fitment tests in-between. For the m40/M43 manifold development, we were a bit more stupid...
Finally though, we settled on a good design...
From this 3D printed mock-up, patterns could then be planned out and 1:1 sketches prepared for the test mould build.
And now for the first test-pours to see if we need to adjust anything in the mould design. Always good to see if final adjustments are needed before a production run...
